CH-47D Chinook helicopter 90-00180 with the Helicopter Icing Spray System (HISS) installed and operating in an extreme cold environment preparing to spray ice. An aircraft requiring analysis of its deicing capabilities would fly approximately 150 feet below the HISS aircraft as it sprayed water. The water would freeze and ice would accumulate on the test aircraft. The aircrew of the test aircraft could then evaluate the deice capabilities of their aircraft.
