AIRCRAFT IN FLIGHT WHILE USING OMEGA/VLF RECEIVERS AS THE PRIMARY 
 
SOURCE OF NAVIGATION.  IN ADDITION, PORTABLE COMPUTERS SHALL BE 
 
SUITABLY STOWED AND NOT OPERATED DURING TAKEOFF, LANDING AND 
 
APPROACH PROCEDURES.
 
    B.  EXCEPT AS STATED IN PARAGRAPH 9A ABOVE, PORTABLE COMPUTERS 
 
MAY BE OPERATED ON BOARD U.S. ARMY AIRCRAFT PROVIDED THAT THE

         (1)  THE PORTABLE COMPUTER MUST BE CERTIFIED AS A CLASS B 
 
COMPUTING DEVICE UNDER SUBPART B, PART 15 OR SUBPART J, PART 15 OF 
 
THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION REGULATIONS.  ALL COMPUTERS 
 
MEETING THESE REGULATIONS CARRY A STICKER CERTIFYING THEIR 
 
COMPLIANCE.
 
         (2)  THE PORTABLE COMPUTER SHALL NOT USE ELECTRICAL CABLING 
 
TO INTERCONNECT WITH THE AIRCRAFT FOR ANY REASON.  THIS INCLUDES USE 
 
OF AIRCRAFT POWER AS THE COMPUTER'S ELECTRICAL SOURCE.
 
         (3)  PRIOR TO FIRST FLIGHT FOR EACH AIRCRAFT AND EACH TYPE 
 
AND MODEL OF PORTABLE COMPUTER.  A QUALITATIVE ELECTROMAGNETIC 
 
COMPATIBILITY (EMC) CHECK SHALL BE CONDUCTED IN ORDER TO DEMONSTRATE 
 
THAT THE COMPUTER DOES NOT SERVE AS A SOURCE OF INTERFERENCE TO 
 
AIRCRAFT ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS.  THIS SHALL BE ACCOMPLISHED 
 
BY MONITORING THE PERFORMANCE OF AIRCRAFT CONTROLS AND INSTRUMENTS 
 
WHILE THE COMPUTER IS STARTED AND INITIALIZED USING ITS BOOTSTRAP 
 
(BOOTUP) PROCEDURE.  ALL AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS SHALL BE IN THEIR "IN 
 
FLIGHT" CONFIGURATION FOR THESE CHECKS.  SPECIAL ATTENTION SHALL BE 
 
GIVEN TO AIRCRAFT COMMUNICATION AND NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT, 
 
PARTICULARLY LORAN, DECCA AND DIRECTION FINDING (DF) SYSTEMS.  IF
