70-15032, Boeing build number B-674, was a CH-47C helicopter. The U.S. Army acceptance date was 30 November 1971. 70-15032 accumulated 3,130.0 aircraft hours. At some point, 70-15032 was assigned the 205th Assault Support Helicopter Company (ASHC) - "Geronimos", located at Finthen Army Airfield, near Mainz-Finthen, in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) (West Germany) through approximately end 1987. At some point, 70-15032 was assigned to Company A - "Hook-ers", 6th Battalion, 158th Aviation Battalion, 124th Army Reserve Command, United States Army Reserve, 6th Army, Forces Command (FORSCOM), located at Paine Field in Everett, Washington. On 5 March 1988, 70-15032 was involved in a Class D accident. While at a hover with a sling load, the eye bolt attachment on the prepared cement block load failed (sheared). As a result of the shear, the sling and attached eye bolt piece recoiled upward and struck the aircraft. There was evidence of prior shear damage to the eye bolt fitting. Incurred to the airframe was a 12 inch gash in a small fiberglass panel (sub floor) and a small dent in a floor panel. A rod end clevis was severed. On 7 March 1988, 70-15032 was involved in a Class D accident. While in cruise flight, an attachment bolt failed and allowed one corner of the lower rescue door to settle. The door was in the open stowed position. The slip stream caught under the door and ripped it from the aircraft. The door landed in parking lot on pavement, no damage or injury. There was minor sheet metal damage to lower rescue door and two small punctures in the bottom of the aircraft. The door was recovered from the civilian domain. On 29 May 1991, 70-15032 was inducted into the D model program and converted to 91-00254. The last known location of 70-15032 was at Boeing during the conversion. Aircraft status: Converted to D model. |

Then known as Canadian Forces Base Lahr, or CFB Lahr, the base was operated primarily as an air force base, and later as an army base, from the late 1950s through 1993. The military base was closed in 1994 and converted to civilian use. Note the small engine foreign object damage (FOD) prevention screens. Click-N-Go Here to view a larger image. |

The cockpit of CH-47C Chinook helicopter 70-15032, circa 1985. Note the Engine Condition Levers (ECLs) mounted on the Center Console. In the D model they were moved to the Overhead Control Panel. The C Model incorporated the use of a Cyclic Stick Positioner mounted on the Canted Console, right side. It allowed the pilot on the controls to move the cyclic forward or aft to suit an individual flying preference. Most pilots never used it and it was dropped from the requirements when the D model was produced. This photograph was taken outside the 205th Assault Support Helicopter Company (ASHC) - "Geronimos" hangar when the unit and aircraft were located at Finthen Army Airfield, near Mainz-Finthen, Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). The Overhead Control Panel of CH-47C Chinook helicopter 70-15030, circa 1985. One of the more interesting features of the C Model was the way in which the APU had to be started. An APU-AGB (Auxilliary Gear Box) switch had to be activated during the APU start which required the pilot's thumb to be placed on the switch while the index finger of the same hand was used to activate the APU start switch. It took some getting used for a new Hook pilot. The Number 2 Engine mounted on 70-15032. This was a Lycoming T55-L-712 powerplant. On this engine, the now defunct and removed engine anti-ice system was still installed. Sometime in the late 1980s, budget constraints and parts availability issues, combined with the small benefit obtained from the use of engine anti-ice, forced its eventual removal from the aircraft. Nore also the aircraft had, by this time, been modfied with the Fiberglass Rotor Blades.
