10 January 1970: CH-47C Chinook helicopter 67-18524 while assigned to A Company - "Pachyderms", 159th Assault Support Helicopter Battalion (ASHB), 101 Airborne Division in the Republic of Vietnam. The aircraft accident occurred just outside the wire at Camp Evans. The aircraft had just refueled and left the POL (Petroleum, Oil, Lubricant) point when it suffered from near simultaneous dual engine failures. In the photo is SP6 Loren J. Holloway, chief Technical Inspector in the company at the time. He removed the fuel lines at the engines for inspection and discovered both were severely contaminated with water and what appeared to be seaweed. The aircraft was recovered to Red Beach, near Danang. Click-N-Go Here to view a larger image. |
