July 2002: Damage to the aircraft as a result of the ramp being too low during the landing sequence is evident in this image. If the ramp is level with the cabin floor a maximum of 15 degrees nose up during landing can be tolerated. If the ramp is lower than floor level a very shallow landing must be made to preclude damage. If the ramp contacts the ground during landing the damage seen here is the result. Additional damage that can lead to a post crash fire is the fracture of the fuel manifold fitting because the manifold is mounted on the same bulkhead immediately above the ramp actuator. At any rate, the number one engine would soon flame out because the fractured fitting is the main fuel supply line for the engine.
